Hamstel Infant School
Hamstel Road - Southend
Hamstel Infant School and Nursery opened in 1914, just 6 days before World War 1 was declared, to serve the rapid residential growth to the east of Central Southend. The school celebrated its centenary year when every child and adult broke a Guinness World Record and we became ‘Officially Amazing’!
The school has a culture of high expectation: we have achieved Inclusion Quality Mark Flagship Status and are a recognised Centre of Excellence for SEND. We hold the NACE (National Association for Able Children in Education) Challenge Award, Active Schools Award, Basic Skills Quality Mark, Science Silver Quality Mark, Arts Mark, CPD Quality Mark (distinction) and is proud to be an ASA Swim School. The school’s ambition is to ensure a rich and balanced curriculum and to sustain best practice in every aspect of its provision. The school has a DfE recognised Specialist Unit, (for children on the Autistic Spectrum), we have a Nurture Unit, a pre-Nurture Unit and a Speech and Language Unit, all catering to meet the individual needs of our children.
The school has undergone major building works, and improvements to the learning environments are evident. The school has fifteen bright and vibrant classrooms of varying sizes, a large multi-purpose hall, a computer suite, a library, a large outdoor trail and a unique outdoor classroom housed in our fantastic Wildlife Area. There is an onsite indoor swimming pool and children swim every week throughout the year. There is a large playing field and we share the site with the partner Junior School. Children join Hamstel Infant School and Nursery in the Reception Year and continue their learning with us through to Year Two. The Nursery caters for children aged 3 and 4 years old and is an important and integral part of our school.
